AN AUTHENTIC WAORANI CULTURAL EXPEDITION

A journey into one of the last truly wild corners of the Amazon, guided by the people who have called it home for generations.

The Heart of the Yasuni Biosphere

YASUNI NATIONAL PARK

Bameno Yasuni Expedition

An Immersive Journey Into Waorani Territory

Deep in the Yasuni National Park — one of the most biodiverse places on Earth — the Waorani community of Bameno keeps alive a way of life shaped by the rainforest for countless generations. Reaching it means leaving the road behind entirely: this expedition travels by canoe along the Shiripuno and Cononaco rivers, through territory that few outsiders ever see.

Along the way, a specialist from the Secretaria de Derechos Humanos joins the group to share context on Ecuador’s uncontacted peoples and the protocols that keep this journey respectful of their territory.

Once in Bameno, the days unfold around the rhythms of the community: traditional dance and song, demonstrations of hunting with blowguns and spears, a visit with the community’s shaman, and jungle treks in search of anacondas, caimans, and the astonishing birdlife of the Yasuni.

This is not a scripted tour — it is a guided, respectful encounter with one of the last places on the planet where the Amazon still moves at its own pace.

“An expedition where every bend in the river brings you closer to a way of life the modern world rarely gets to witness.”

What Makes This Expedition Unique?

🏞 Deep Waorani Territory
Bameno sits at the far edge of Yasuni National Park, reachable only by canoe — among the most remote communities travelers can responsibly visit in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

🎭 Living Culture, Not a Performance
Traditional dance, hunting demonstrations, artisan crafts, and a visit with the community shaman, shared directly by Waorani families.

🐊 Extraordinary Biodiversity
Yasuni is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet — caimans, anacondas, monkeys, macaws, and hundreds of bird species along the rivers.

⛺ Wilderness Camping
Nights under canvas on the sandy banks of the Rio Cononaco, alongside traditional Waorani lodging in Bameno itself.

👥 Small, Personalized Groups
A dedicated guide and a group size built for genuine cultural exchange, not crowds.

Waorani Traditions

The Waorani have hunted these rivers and forests with blowguns and spears for generations. During the expedition, community members demonstrate these traditional hunting techniques, and travelers can try their hand at the blowgun themselves — a skill that still matters for daily life in Bameno.

Evenings bring traditional dance and song, and a visit to the community’s shaman, Kemperi, offers a rare window into Waorani spiritual life. Locally made crafts — spears, blowguns, necklaces, bracelets, and hammocks — are also available directly from the artisans who make them.
